It started drizzling halfway through the journey back home. We drove in silence; her last words replaying in my ears. She had a daughter – what the hell? Who would have thought such a thing would have happened? I had an affair with a married woman – well, I didn’t know that she had a husband yet it still bothered me too much. A phantom image of an unknown Japanese girl started surfacing in my head.
All of a sudden, I was riddled with guilt – it felt as if I had betrayed the kid and her father.

“Can I join you?”
I looked up to see Ritsuko smiling awkwardly at me, a tray of food in her hands.
“Yeah, sure.” I began moving my things off from the only seat beside me.
“Akagi-san said I would find you here. He told me that you’re bringing convenience-store-bought-bentos for lunch – why is that?”

Locked up in a stall in the toilet wasn’t how I envisioned my first day of work would be yet that was where I ended up at. Nervous, stressed and worried about how everything would pan out, the weekend I had in Okinawa was long forgotten now. My social anxiety – or should I say my overall anxiety disorder (?) was the reason why it was difficult previously in finding a job; having found the suitable job, I realised then I was worrying about the wrong reasons altogether. It wasn’t the job that was problematic; it was the people there. I was too antisocial for their liking.
Which, again, was one of the reason I left that cushy job for this uncertainty.
Feeling the bile rise up once again, I got up from the toilet seat and bend over it immediately, barely propping myself in time before I began heaving heavily into it. Trying to keep my voice down, overly cautious about the movement outside of my door, I continued emptying my stomach of its contents, hoping fleetingly that this sickness would stop once my stomach has been emptied of all of its contents.

Just a quick post; I’ve been asked recently about what prompted me to use such a title for this story – and well, it was inspired by my ex girlfriend, though.
When I was coming up with the concept and sketching out a rough draft of the story, she introduced to me a song that had these lines in them, “she smells like lemongrass and sleep” (we became addicted to the song and the singer’s voice), whereas the Citrus part came from the fact that her perfume had a very tangy, citrus-y scent to it. Every time we were together, that scent would envelope me – so much that I still remember it though we’ve broken up more than 2 years ago. >.<‘
That’s how I ended up with such a title; sounds unoriginal, I know but that’s how it came to fruition (no pun intended)
“What are you doing? Are you out of your mind?”
“I probably am. It feels such at the moment.”
I kept still as she inched forwards towards me. I wondered what she was up to; I didn’t feel any apprehension from her at the moment but I was still feeling slightly wary.
“What are you up to?” I asked her as she stood in front of me.

I watched as she slowly sauntered towards the beach before I followed her. She was confident with herself – I could see that in her stride, in the way she looked. She walked into the water and lowered herself, beckoning at me with her fingers as she did.
“I told you I’m not much of a swimmer.”
It was obvious that she didn’t hear me; she was already swimming away. I flopped onto the sand at the side, letting the water wash over my toes as I watched her swim. The streaks from her blue bikini flashed brightly under the evening sky, reminding me of those rare sightings of dolphin that I’ve seen once long ago.

As promised, she took me to a shop nearby the beach, choosing a mat and a beach ball for me. She had her own in her blue Subaru, which was coincidentally the same design as the one she chose for me. I brushed the thoughts swarming in my head – this was a tourist spot after all, which meant everything was mass-produced, which meant that it wasn’t surprising to find people with similar items here. There wasn’t anything going on – I kept repeating in my head, trying not to look at her for too long in that blue bikini of hers.
Seeming as if she had read my mind, she had chosen a spot quite secluded from the rest of the beach-goers, which was quite a feat seeing as the beach was packed at the moment. Apparently it was a common thing to do here – to laze around and watch the sunset before heading for dinner and a nightcap. There were a couple of groups that had their portable BBQ grill with them; I was slightly envious but knowing that I had no knowledge as to how to operate them nor did I have anyone to share it with, I had to forget about it.
